Flying at an altitude of about 240 miles over the eastern North Atlantic, the Expedition 30 crew aboard the International Space Station photographed this nighttime scene.
The night lights of the cities of Ireland, in the foreground, and the United Kingdom, in the back and to the right, are contrasted by the bright sunrise in the background. The greens and purples of the Aurora Borealis are seen along the rest of the horizon.

This nighttime image, photographed in Feb. 2, 2012 by one of the members of the Expedition 30 crew from the International Space Station, features the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area strung along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan.
The region is partially covered by clouds, probably low-hanging, or even fog. Meteorologists say there is a fine line between low thin clouds and fog. Fog is not common in the Great Lakes area this time of the year (usually too windy), but this has been an exceptionally mild winter.
The faint gold line of airglow—caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting the gas molecules in the upper atmosphere—parallels the horizon or Earth limb. Minor auroral activity (Borealis) is visible in upper right.

Felix Pharand-Deschenes’ Anthropocene Mapping project marks the paths of human activity including roadways, railways, airway traffic, internet cables, electricity transmission lines, and underwater data cables. He acquired all this factual information from various US government agencies.
The word “Anthropocene” is especially fitting for this piece of research; the meaning behind the ancient Greek word is derived from - anthropos means “human being” and kainos means “new, current.” The word use commonly used to describe the current “geological epoch”, which is dominated by human activity.
The definition for the Anthropocene proposed by Globaïa:
A period marked by a regime change in the activity of industrial societies which began at the turn of the nineteenth century and which has caused global disruptions in the Earth System on a scale unprecedented in human history: climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution of the sea, land and air, resources depredation, land cover denudation, radical transformation of the ecumene, among others. These changes command a major realignment of our consciousness and worldviews, and call for different ways to inhabit the Earth.

This video of the Aurora Australis was created from a sequence of still shots taken by astronauts on board the International Space Station. The images were acquired on September 11, 2011 as the ISS orbit pass descended over eastern Australia, reached the “bottom” of the orbit, then changed direction to an ascending pass just east of New Zealand during the night hours — in essence describing a wide “U” over the region.
